College of Arts and Crafts – Lucknow was founded in 1911. Mr. Nathanial Herd headd this institution as it's first Principal who emphasized on western realism in art. The design concept and the methods adapted for teaching various art and craft courses were also modelled on western pattern, ignoring Indian sensibilities. This hampered the creative growth to a great extent. It was not until the year 1925 when the need to liberalize the system was felt. This resulted into basic structural changes and some new faces could emerge. Two important influences worth mentioning at that time were that of Shri Asit Kumar Haldar and of Shri L.M. Sen, one for his association with what we broadly ascribe as traditional Indian School and the other for his academic approach.
In this connection the names of Shri Brieshwar Sen, Shri Hirenmoy Roy Chowdhry, Shri Shidhar Mahapatra, Shri H. L. Merh and Shri Sudhir Ranjan Khastgir should also be mentioned as they furthered the great traditions of
College of Arts and Crafts – Lucknow. These traditions continued, but with the beginning of the 6th decade, a few important names emerged, who made significant contribution in bringing out academic reforms, namely Shri M.L. Nagar, Shri R. S. Bisht, Shri A.S. Panwar, Shri B. N. Arya, Shri N. N. Mahaptra, Shri Mohd. Haneef, Shri U.N. Verma.
The list is not exhaustive. With the advent of Shri Dinkar Kowshik as Principal and later Shri Sukhveer Singhal and Shri R.S.Bisht of College of Arts and Crafts – Lucknow assumed wider dimensions and enlargered its perspective. To maintain its reputation as one of the major Art Institutions of the country offering highest quality of training in the field of Visual Arts, most modern concepts in terms of style, manner and techniques were adapted. A completely new generation of artists like Shri Jai Krishna Agarwal, Shri P. C. Little and Shri Satish Chandra were added in the faculty.
Therefore a large number of students who graduated from College of Arts and Crafts – Lucknow carved out their image at National and International level in the field of visual arts. So far eighteen National Akademi Awards have gone to the students and the teachers and two ex-principals were awarded Padma-shri besides numerous other National and International level awards and recognitions. College of Arts and Crafts – Lucknow library is a beautiful and modern library well updated books, journals & multimedia learning aids, provides the student and opportunities to keep themselves well versed with related information. A library well stocked with all the necessary volumes is available at the student's disposal. It is the synthesis of theories with working knowledge, together avenues to exploit all the available resources; we can mould our students into thorough professionals, who would become the leaders of their profession.
On November 1, 1892, School of Industrial Design was established in Wingfield Manzil, the present-day Banarsi Bagh or the Lucknow Zoological Gardens. It shifted to Aminabad and later to Baans Mandi, till finally, Public Works Department was assigned the job of building permanent premises for the institution and the foundation was laid in 1909-1910. In1911, the building of
College of Arts and Crafts – Lucknow was ready and from the stage of its inauguration in 1911 to the beginning of session it kept being referred to as School of Design, School of Art, or School of Industrial Design, till finally, in 1917 it was given the name Government College School of Arts and Crafts.
