Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Ranchi is the 22nd Regional Centre of the University, established in March 2000. In the past 6 years this Regional Centre has expanded widely in terms of Learner Support Network as well as enrolment. Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Ranchi started with 11 Learner Support Centres with about 8000 students in 2000, and today there are 52 Centres located in different districts. All the 22 districts of Jharkhand State have been covered by our Learner Support Centres, and there are many Centres at sub-district level also.
The enrolment in Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Ranchi has also increased rapidly. In 2006-07 the total enrolment in different programmes is 25591. Academic Programmes varying from Certificate Programmes to Postgraduate Programmes in diverse academic disciplines ranging from literature to medicine are available in this Region. In Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Ranchi there are 41 DRS locations under different categories (IGNOU, WEP, RCI, DEC, SSA). Three Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITs) of Educate, one at this Regional Centre, one at Jamshedpur Study Centre and one at Hazaribagh Study Centre have been installed and all three are functional.

Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Ranchi is located at Ashok Nagar, Ranchi, Jharkhand. Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Ranchi has taken special initiative in the area of teacher education. More than 20000 teachers have been enrolled in competency building programmes like CIG, CTE and CTPM in the last two years. In addition, Diploma in Primary Education (DPE) Programme has been launched for Primary School Teachers in this Region in January 2005 in which 16544 teachers have been enrolled. The presently the total enrolment In the DPE programme is 29687 Efforts are being made to enter a Strategic Partnership with the Government of Jharkhand in the area of health education for the competency building of health functionaries at different levels.
Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Ranchi has a wide network of study, work and programme centres through which it reaches out to its students located in different parts of the country. Academic counseling is an important instructional component of distance teaching/learning and consists of tutoring and general counseling. Work centres have been established for programmes with practical components, i.e. Laboratory Classes.
Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Ranchi Library is the most resourceful information centre in the country in the field of Distance Education. The library has the largest collection of books, journals and other related materials in the field of Distance Education, throughout the country. The Library was established in 1986 in tune with the objectives of IGNOU.
