Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi was incorporated in 1964,with its headquarters in New Delhi, It has branches at all nine zonal Railway Headquarters-Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai, Chennai, Guwahati, Gorakhpur, Secunderabad and also Research Design and Standards Organisation at Lucknow, Integral Coach Factory at Chennai, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works at Chittaranjan, Diesel Locomotive Works at Varanasi, Wheel & Axle Plant at Bangalore, Centre for Railway Information Services [CRIS] at New Delhi and Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala. The Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi is managed by a Governing Council which includes Chairman and Members of the Railway Board, the General Managers of the Zonal Railways Production units and other Senior Railway Personnel.
In 1977, in pursuance of the objectives of the Institute to disseminate knowledge in the field of transport-a One-Year Correspondence Diploma Course in “Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi " was commenced. The Course is of immense benefits to students, railway men and professionals. The lessons of the course have been prepared in easy language, which can be understood even by the persons who have no previous knowledge of railway working.
Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi serves as a bank of ideas and thoughts. It has lot of senior experienced people as its members. These senior members enrich the Institute with their knowledge and experience which can be taken advantage of by the young officers and supervisors. This is the only institution where railway men from all departments and non-railway men can meet and interact freely without any inhibition and departmental bias.
Over the years Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi has kept pace with the changing needs and demands of the modern world. In keeping with the time, IRT has embraced other forms of transportation such as road transport, riverine sea and air transport. IRT has also given attention to the advances in telecommunication, computer technology as they develop interfaces with transport technology.
The management of the affairs of the Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi is conducted by the Governing Council consisting of 35 members. The Chairman of the Railway Board is its President, two Members of the Railway Board its Vice-Presidents, Senior Officers of the Railway Board, its Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer. The Governing Council also has three past Presidents. Other members of the Governing Council consist of GMs of the nine Zonal Railways, DG/RDSO, General Managers of Railway Production Units and retired senior officers of the Railways and senior officers of the Railway Board. The Governing Council Members are elected once in two years at the Annual General Meeting held normally during December every year.
The members of the Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi come from different parts of the country and from different walks of life. The Institute also has numerous members abroad. Members comprise of Founder Members, Fellows, Life Members and Life Associates.
Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi publishes a quarterly journal which provides a major forum for sharing of new ideas and thinking on transport technology and other disciplines. It brings our issues devoted to topical themes such as Productivity, Planning, Energy Conservation, Urban Transport, Transport Economics, Multimodal Transport etc.
Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi invites advertisements for the journal. The journal is printed on map litho paper with an average of 50 to 60 pages per issue. About 5,000 copies of the journal are distributed all over India. The readership of the journal includes a larger number of railway executives within the country and outside, as also economists, technicians, engineers and industrial managers. Copies are circulated amongst the top management of the Railway in the developing countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America and premier Industrial concerns connected with the manufacture and trade of railway and ancillary equipment in these countries, in addition to members of IRT.
Institute of Rail Transport-IRT Delhi conducts workshops, seminars and conferences on subjects pertaining to Rail Transport, multimodal transport, management and other subjects from time to time.
