American Swiss is a jewelery chain store in South Africa that first came into existence in the year 1896 with the efforts of Isaiah Hirschsoh a Russian immigrant. He came to South Africa with two suitcases one full of American watches and the other contains Swiss watches. In the year 1923 the company decided to expand its business out of Caledon Street and took a shop on rent in Parliament Street. The company introduced their first watch house brand named Union Special in the year 1928. By the 1930's the company started the facility of 'Credit' to help people in times of financial jinx. The company started selling other products like optical, photographic, leather goods, luggage and sports equipments. In the year 1967 the company was bought by
Foschini and
Foschini group was formed. The company started moving out of the Capetown and opened new locations in other parts of the country. In the 1990's it introduced jewelery products in its product range and many celebrities were seen wearing its jewelery products. In the year 1991 it opened its first international store in Namibia.
