Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna has been established by Law Society of Bihar in January 1984. The Law Society of Bihar is a registered Society under Societies Registration Act 1860 bearing registration No. 440 of 1983-1984 under Government. of Bihar, established by senior and renowned members of Patna High Court Bar. The main objective of the society was to establish the Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna to impart multi dimensional legal education. Its objective was to prepare students for the diverse world of litigation, law, corporate firms and research as well as to fulfill the legal expectation of people of Bihar.
Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna is managed by a committee of its own, consisting of members of Bihar Law Society also. The Governing Body consists of the President Sri Keshri Kishore Sharan who is the Senior Advocate of the Hon’ble Patna High Court and who had been part time lecturer in Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna for a long time. The Secretary of the Governing Body Sri Keshav Shrivastava is a Senior Advocate of Patna High Court and is a member of the Bihar State Bar Council for the last 15 years. The other members of the Governing Body are Sri Tara Kishore Prasad, Sri S. S. Asghar Hussain, Sri S. K. Mazumdar and Sri Rajeshwar Dayal, Sri Yugal Kishore who are all Senior Advocates of Patna High Court.
Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna had a very modest beginning in 1984 in the campus of Miller School, Patna. The Institute has shifted to its own building, the present campus, in 1994 which has been divided into class rooms, Administrative Block, Teacher’s Room, President’s Chamber, Director’s Chamber, and Principal’s Chamber, Staff Room, General office, Separate Common room for boys and girls and a well equipped Library.
Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna is recognized by the Magadh University in whose jurisdiction the Institute imparts LL.B. three year degree courses. The Bar Council of India has granted affiliation to this Institute from 1984 and onwards. Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna has started five year law course (Session 2006-07) after getting due permission from the Bar Council of India, New Delhi, for the students who want to choose their career in legal profession from very beginning.
The Moot Court of Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna, Law Seminars, Mock Parliament, and Legal Debates are held regularly and are part of routine. In academic activities, students are sent to participate in the moot court competitions in other universities of India. Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna is imparting legal education under the guidance of these legal luminaries of the State who are not only well proficient in legal profession but are men of every high academic order and interest.
Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna has a rich Law Library having sufficient number of books as per curriculum with reference books and law journals which meet the specific requirement of aspiring professionals and engaged teachers. The Law library of Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna has a very spacious reading room facility and remains open for 8 hours on every working day.
Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna is planning to establish a placement cell for the students and for this purpose big industrial houses are being contacted. Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna also extends our guidance to the students in choice of career or for new avenues of higher studies besides counseling for appropriate and reachable career goals.
Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna is going to establish a legal aid and counseling cell for ladies and other weaker sections of the society. Bihar Institute of Law-BIL Patna has installed a computer with internet facility which is helpful in updating the knowledge of teachers and students in addition to the activities of the institute.
