Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic-SBM Polytechnic Mumbai was established in 1963 by the Shri Vile Parle Kelvani Mandal with a donation of Rs. 7,50,000 from Shri Arvind Mafatlal and his brothers and named after their uncle Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal.
Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic-SBM Polytechnic Mumbai is one of the 22 other educational institutions, from a Shishu Vihar to college of Law and Engineering, run by the Mandal. Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic-SBM Polytechnic Mumbai also comes under the World Bank Technician Education Project and receives project funds from State and Central Government for establishing facilities and developing infrastructure. Maharashtra government chose Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic-SBM Polytechnic Mumbai as an experimental polytechnic.Thus, Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic-SBM Polytechnic Mumbai is now fully autonomous for all the Diploma are awarded by the Polytechnic. This indicted that as the institute grew it gained credibility and justified the confidence accorded to it in the beginning.

Each full time diploma course except(Computer Engineering & Information Technology) is on semester sandwich pattern and of four year's duration and incorporates two periods of 26 weeks each for inplant training. Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic-SBM Polytechnic Mumbai has two semesters per year. The courses are thus spread over eight semesters. The students receive institutional training for the first four semesters. In the fifth semester they are sent to industry for inplant or field training. They return to Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic-SBM Polytechnic Mumbai in the sixth &seventh semester for institutional training. In the concluding eight semester, they again receive inplant or field training. This scheme enables the students to learn under actual work situation during their training and improves their prospects for employment. Final diploma is awarded after satisfactory completion of training and examination at the end of the eighth semester.
