The National Institute of Engineering-NIE was started in the year 1946 with admission only to a diploma course in Civil Engineering. The first batch of 86 students answered their attendance call sitting in a rustic room with thatched roof in Laxmipuram. Later, the classes were held in a temporary shed in the Sharada Vilas High School campus. However, the untiring efforts of the retired senior engineer trio, Sri.S.Ramaswamy, Sri.D.V.Narasimha Rao and Sri.T.Rama Rao,
The National Institute of Engineering-NIE founders, gave fruition when the National Institute of Engineering was securely established by 1950 with its own class rooms and workshops on a sprawling 6-acre land in Mysore South.
The National Institute of Engineering-NIE is Situated about 5 Km from both Mysore City Railway Station and City Bus Station, the National Institute of Engineering Campus provides a full range of social and intellectual activities aided by facilities from libraries, lecture and seminar halls to students. Amenities and an impressive stage. There is a spirit of "oneness" among the staff and students, who come from different parts of India, and the concepts of National Institute of Engineering family is advocated.
The National Institute of Engineering-NIE provides separate hostel accommodation with mess facility for both boys and girls. The hostel for boys is situated behind the National Institute of Engineering Campus and it commands a strength of 280 inmates. The hostel for girls with 60 inmates is at a distance of about one km from the Institute.The hostels are equipped with solar water heaters for round-the-clock hot water supply. Television set and facilities for a few indoor games have been provided. In order to cater to the medical needs of the entire NIE family, a health centre has been set up in the Golden Jubilee Block. A lady and a male doctor are available for consultation during office hours. National Institute of Engineering has a Library, with a collection of over 60,000 titles, it includes Abstracts, Technical reports Proceedings, Data handbooks, Standards, Manuals, Directories, Year book, Biographical sources, Gazetteers, Text books, Theses and Dissertation, Encyclopedias and other general books recommended by teachers and students. The 3-floor spacious Library, located in the main campus, is one of the best engineering college libraries in the state. It receives about 80 selected periodicals and technical journals and about 50 general magazines. Abstracts, technical reports, proceedings, data handbooks and BIS and other important standard manuals, encyclopaedias are also available. The National Institute of Engineering-NIE encourages co-curricular activities in the field of sports and culture. In fact, the ideals of the founders that sports should be a part of engineering education has been maintained. Thus, The National Institute of Engineering has produced state, zonal and national level sportsmen.

The National Institute of Engineering-NIE is one of the premier institutions in the country offering B.E. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Information Science, Electrical, Electronics, Industrial & Production, Mechanical Engineering and part-time B.E (evening course) for practicing Civil Engineering Diploma holders. The National Institute of Engineering also offers Master's degree specializations in Hydraulics, Power Systems, Production Engineering & System Technology, Computer Applications to Industrial Drives, Computer Network Engineering, Information Technology and Product Design & Manufacturing and Computer Applications (MCA). The NIE is a recognised research institution under VTU and offers Doctoral Programmes in Civil, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical and Industrial Production Engineering.

. The T&P Division has adequate infrastructure comprising of group Discussion and Interview Rooms. The placement cell is equipped with Computers with internet facility. The placement cell maintains a database of all the registered students with all relevant details and information of companies visiting the campus. A large number of companies visit the campus every year and recruit eligible students from the campus. The number of students placed through campus recruitment activity is increasing every year.

A senior member of the staff, designated as Placement Officer, is in charge of placement and training activities. During the academic year 2008-09 we had a total of 250 students placed through campus recruitment. We had the privilege of being visited by 65 companies including 40 IT-companies and 25 non-IT companies We had the good fortune of being visited by core companies specific to each domain such as ABB LTD. and BOSCH INDIA LTD for mechanical and Industrial & Production
, L & T Emsys, FREESCALE for electrical & Electronics and Electronics & Communication, TCS, WIPRO for Computer Science and also by many dream companies such as Cisco, IBM, AMAZON and MICROSOFT. The placement cell library has a good collection of books and materials related to placement and overall personality development.
