Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat was established in 1973 in the eastern upper part of Majuli, the river island under Jorhat district of Assam. Situated in a completely rural surrounding enriched by beautiful natural scenery in an areas of 27 bighas of land, Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat was started from a small number of students of higher secondary level in a few class rooms and office buildings constructed with arduous attempt of some dedicated villagers of the locality. It was a time when there was no institution for higher education in the neighborhood and student of poor tribal communities that dominate this region remain deprived of collegiate education. Therefore the mishings, who are the major and leading tribal communities here, organized all other social communities who gave a combined effort to give birth to this institution. Teachers, principals and employees of Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat rendered their valuable service for long fifteen years without remuneration depending on few public donations from time to time in cash and kind.
Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat received pre-degree affiliation in 1983 and degree affiliation in 1987 under Dibrugarh University. It was included under section 2(f) of the UGC in August 1993 and under 12(B) in 1998. The college was awarded Grade (C+) by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) in 2004. Now Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat has full fledged class rooms, staff common room, Principal and Vice- Principal’s chambers in Assam type buildings and a separate library with ground floor RCC and first floor Assam type construction, a canteen etc. There are hostels for boys and girls separately. Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat has been able to provide amenities to students and proper ambiances for study as well as for extracurricular activities. The college imparts education on H.S. & Degree level in arts with provision for major course in Assamese, Economics, History, Political Science and Sociology.
Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat Library has a separate RCC building on the ground floor area of 1000 sq feet and the same area on the first floor constructed with the financial assistance of the UGC. There are 5186 nos. of books on Dec-2004. After addition of 1540 nos. of books at present total no of books 6726, 2500 no’s, of reference books 4 nos. of journals and regularly subscribed, 4 nos. of news papers in the library. Employment news, books on General Knowledge and Science, Career Counseling etc. are also available. Reading room has separate Columns for teachers and students. Previous year question papers and question banks are issued to students for their benefits.
There are Hostel facilities for boys and girls within Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat campus. Separates application is to be submitted in prescribed form for hostel admission as per notification. Adequate care is taken to provide all necessary facilities to the boarders. Allotment of seats are made on merit and distance basis. Students admitted to the hostel shall have to follow Hostel Rules which will be made available to the boarders by the respective Wardens. There are twenty seats for accommodation for boys in the boys' Hostel and 32 seats for the Girls in the Girls' Hostel. Girls' Hostel has been recently renovated with all facilities of lavatory, a separate mess and kitchen, bathroom, electrification and water supply required for boarders.
There is a College Canteen within Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat campus. It is meant for Refreshment of teachers and students of the college. The Canteen remains open during the working hours of the College. The Canteen has been constructed by the Alumni Association of the College. There are separate Common rooms for boys and girls. Indoor games and electrification facilities are available in the common rooms. There are two common rooms for teachers. The College under takes extension activities programmes by involving students and NSS Volunteers to help and serve the people around the College and also think and learns about the society. The NSS wing of Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat follows the instruction of the University which organized camps and provides certificates to the Volunteers. Recently the college NSS volunteers have contributed successfully in the field of plantation, survey of birth registration, sanitation and awareness programmes through various special camps.
Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat has a NSS Unit affiliated to the NSS wing of Dibrugarh University. College campus beautification, awareness programs like those relating to AIDS , health, population control, literacy and community awareness are under taken by the NSS volunteers. Students have facilitates of getting information of employment opportunities, advertised in news papers. The Lecturer-in-charge of the Cell notices the information of jobs and training opportunities through the Principal. Students can collect information from the Cell for improving their academic and competitive aptitude. Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College – U M K College Jorhat has a Grievance Redressal Cell headed by the Principal to look into the grievance of the students and the college employees (Teaching and Non-teaching). The College constituted the Cell in 2005 as per the NAAC’s guide-lines. The purpose of the cell is to ensure quality awareness among the stake-holders of the institution, bringing about quality consciousness among the concerned section for improvement and advancement of the College.
