National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal as country's premier Dairy Research institution has developed considerable expertise over the last five decades in different areas of Dairy Production, Processing, Management and Human Resource Development. Information generated at the Institute and the services offered have contributed to the growth of Dairy Industry as a whole and well-being of millions of milk producers and consumers of milk and milk products. Realizing the challenging need of global Dairy Trade, the Institute is continuously working to develop its R&D and HRD programmes to better serve the nation in terms of food security, employment generation, poverty alleviation and economic prosperity.
National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal was originally started as Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in 1923 at Bangalore. It was expanded and renamed as Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936 and was known as National Dairy Research Institute after independence in 1947. Subsequently, in 1955, National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal Headquarter was shifted to Karnal. Facilities at Bangalore were retained to function as a Regional Station to serve the Southern States. In 1964, Eastern Regional Station of the Institute was established at Kalyani in West Bengal. Both these Regional Stations continue to provide region specific R&D support for dairy development in these areas. In 1970, National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal was brought under the wings of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to provide greater operational autonomy to the Institute in research management functions. In 1989, status of Deemed University was conferred to the Institute for further strengthening the academic programmes for human resource development.
National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal as the premier Dairy Research Institution undertakes research, teaching and extension activities towards dairy development in the country. Being the National Institute, it conducts basic and applied research with the objective to enhance animal productivity and also to develop cost effective technologies for the benefit of the teeming millions. Further, the Institute provides high quality manpower to meet the human resource requirements for the overall dairy development in the country. The Institute also undertakes extension programmes for transferring the know-how from the laboratory to the farmers’ fields.
The first formal Dairy Technology course was started in India at NDRI in 1957. Over the past five decades, the Institute has produced more than 2,000 Dairy Diploma holders, 1,174 dairy graduates, 1,903 post-graduates at Masters Level and 873 at Doctorate level in different disciplines of Dairying. Deemed University status was conferred on the Institute in 1989, for further strengthening its academic programmes. National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal provides high quality education in the field of dairying, which has no parallel in Asia. The programmes of NDRI Deemed University are constantly reviewed and updated to impart requisite knowledge levels to the graduates to make them academically proficient in meeting the emerging global challenges. Supplementary to the classroom teaching, one-year in-plant training in an industrial environment providing an opportunity to the NDRI students to manage dairy processing jobs in a commercial milieu is an outstanding feature of the B. Tech (Dairy Technology) programme. A Placement Cell of the Institute provides career guidance, training and placement services for the students. National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal post-graduate students provide the core faculty for the State Agricultural Universities in Dairy and allied disciplines and also serve the ICAR, CSIR and other National Laboratories as scientists. Alumni of this Institute occupy responsible positions in dairy industry and in R&D institutions and universities, both in India and abroad.

Infrastructure of National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal the sprawling 560 ha campus of the Institute is self sufficient in housing laboratories, offices, hostels, hospital, residential complexes, auditorium etc. Various laboratories of the Institute are equipped with the state-of-the-art analytical instruments for carrying out research in most advanced areas of Molecular Biology, Cell Culture, Fermentation Technology, Protein Chemistry, Nutritional Studies, Food Technology, Microbiology, Micro Element Analysis, etc.

The Communication center of National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal has developed the facilities of digital photography/videography, State-of-the-art projection systems displays of achievements and technologies of various Divisions of the Institute and Main Auditorium and Mini auditorium to organize various functions and events of the institute.
Photo lab ofNational Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal the photography section plays a vital role in providing photographic aid and Slide making facilities to the scientist for research and students for dissertations. This facility is extended to other Organizations like ICAR institutes, Agricultural universities, KVKs etc. Practical training in photography and slide making is imparted to the students of extension education. Photographs are also supplied to V.I.Ps and for press releases in leading news Papers. This section is also responsible for providing photographs for NDRI publications like Annual Report and research highlights. It also supplies photographs to the NDRI Museum & exhibition Unit for making panels. Further a photographic collection of All Indian/Exotic breeds of cattle and fodders are available in the section. Thousands of B & W negatives and Photographs pertaining to research work of the scientist have been recorded and preserved division wise for future reference.
Video lab of National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal audio Visual Lab.of Extension Division is the central facility of the institute which is equipped with latest & modern equipment of A.V. aids like video editing, VCR, video editing central unit, video camera, colour T.V monitors 16 mm movie projectors, Amplifiers, 35 m.m. slide projectors, over head Projectors, epidiascopes, LCD Projectors, audio recording equipments which are handled by well trained, experienced technical persons. The main objectives of National Dairy Research Institute - NDRI Karnal is to provide the facilities of A.V. aids during seminars, meetings, Conferences and other important functions of the Institute. To educate scientists and students of graduate & post graduate level regarding the preparation & uses of A.V. aids and their operations. To propagate the research findings of the Institute to the Dairy farmers, Village level workers & farm ladies using various A.V. aids. To produce video films on research projects. To produce video films on different aspects of Dairying for the upliftment of Dairy farmers.
