Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao was founded by the Vidya Vikas Mandal - an educational society dedicated to the development of quality education. The Mandal was registered on August 1, 1971, a date chosen to coincide with the death anniversary of freedom fighter Lokmanya BAL Gangadhar Tilak, who had been an eminent educationist. In 1973, the Mandal established its first institution - Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics - a college of Commerce affiliated to the University of Bombay.
Established in 1973, Vidya Vikas Mandal’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao – the flagship institution of Vidya Vikas Mandal, is recognized all over Goa as a premier institution of higher education. The College has been accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) at the B++ level until 2011.
Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao is the first institution that was started under the name of the Mandal in the year 1973. The philanthropic Kare house came forward to assist the establishment of a Law College in South Goa. The result was the establishment of G.R.Kare College of Law in the year 1979. The Damodar College was bifurcated in to Degree and Higher Secondary School and another philanthropist, the Salgaocar house helped in the opening of the Ramacrisna Madeva Salgaocar Higher Secondary School. Recognizing the needs of the distant learners, Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao started a Study Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University which is catering the needs of about 1000 students every year. Later in the years the Mandal went on to start an English medium School named as Vidya Vikas Academy. Already the Damodar College and the Law College have own buildings and now the Academy shall have its own building in 2005. The Mandal also runs an Institute of Management and Training named after the founder President Late Shri H. M. N. Gaunekar. This institute is the only organization in Goa which caters to the training needs of IFS officers in the country. It also acts as a study centre for Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. As the President of this great organization “Vidya Vikas Mandal” for the last 25 years, I have witnessed substantial growth of this organization. I wish that all the individual units become autonomous and see the Mandal assumes the status of A Deemed University in the days to come. The Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao Students' Council is constituted according to the Goa University Rules with the following aims and objectives: To promote all round development of the students of this college. To organize curricular and extra-curricular activities of the college. To discuss any suggestions, plans of action, resolutions, issues etc. pertaining to the general welfare of the student community of the Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao. The Council consists of: President: Principal of the College (Ex-officio) Teacher Advisor: A Teacher of the College nominated by the Principal General Secretary Elected by all the students in the College One each of the following categories from each class/division, as applicable: i Class Representatives: One elected from each Class. ii. Division Representatives: One elected from each Division. iii. One Lady Student Representative from each Class: Students from all divisions of the Class will vote Elections to the Council are held not later than one month from the commencement of each academic year or within one month of the declaration of the University Results. Counting of votes is done the very day of the elections and the results are declared on the basis of simple majority vote.
Sports activities are governed by a Gymkhana Committee which consists of the following : President Principal (Ex-officio) Vice-President Physical Director Teacher Advisor Nominated by the Principal General Captain To be elected from among the Captains of different teams To be nominated by the Director of Physical Education The major activities of Gymkhana consist of organization of inter-class sports events, participation in various Inter-Collegiate Sports activities and organization of the Annual Athletic Meet.
Every year, Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao publish our annual magazine, “DAMODAR”. Its Editorial Board consists of the members of the staff and student representatives. It provides a creative outlet for our young budding poets and writers. The editorial board invites creative literary efforts such as short stories, poems and articles and even sketches by the students. Students are free to contribute in English, Hindi, Konkani and Marathi. The magazine is also a chronicle of the activities during the year and carries reports of the Conveners of various committees.
The Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao runs a Students’ Consumer Cooperative Society where textbooks are sold to students at concessional rates. The usual discount allowed is 10% to all students. The profit of the Society is used for the welfare of the student community of this College. Since its inception in 1974, the Society has made tremendous progress and has been applauded by press and others. Even other colleges occasionally take advantage of this Society.
College offers different kind of Bachelor and Master Courses leading to different kind of streams.
The Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao has the Army, Navy and Girls Units of N.C.C. Our NCC Officers and Cadets have done remarkably well and brought laurels to the College and the NCC Directorate.
Every year, about 300 students are enrolled in Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics - Margao N.S.S. Unit. Apart from being involved in socially useful projects, these students participate in a ten-day Special Camp, which involves community work. Living together for an extended period of time brings together students from diverse backgrounds.
