Nawab Jassa Singh Ahluwalia Government College – NJSA Govt College Kapurthala was established in 1856, as a Sanskrit Vidyalya. This Institution was upgraded as Intermediate College in 1896 by his Excellency Maharaja Jagatjit Singh and was upgraded as Degree College in 1945. The Science classes were started in 1953. Commerce faculty was added in 1986 and B.Sc. Medical was introduced in 1991. The Postgraduate classes in the subjects of English, Economics and M.Com were introduced in the year 1968, 1978 and 2004 respectively. The college is spread over an area of 31.5 acres of land and situated in the heart of the princely town of Kapurthala.

Nawab Jassa Singh Ahluwalia Government College – NJSA Govt College Kapurthala volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore and submitted its Self Study Report in June 2004. A Peer Team constituted by the Council to visit the college and validate the Self Study Report. The Peer Team was consisted of Prof. C.K. Sharma, former Vice Chancellor Awdesh Pratap Singh University, Madhya Pradesh as Chairperson, Prof. Nisar Ali, Professor, Department of Economics, University of Kashmir, Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir) as member and Prof. K.L. Miglani, Principal, Arya P.G. College, Panipat (Haryana) as member Co-coordinator.

The college teams have been winning consistently the University Championship in Kho-Kho only.
The N.S.S. Programme of the college is working satisfactorily. The volunteers participate in the need based activities for the villagers and impart value based education to the people regarding the social evils like Female - Foeticide and infanticide, AIDS, illiteracy through street plays and cultural programmes. The boys and girls carry out 'shramdan', tree plantation and campaign for cleanliness and sanitation. Blood Donation Camps are also organised. The name of N.C.C Officer was recommended for membership of syndicate of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar by the Commanding Officer 21-Punjab BN N.C.C on account of his dedication and excellent record. The college brings out the Magazine named Randhir annually in which the students get an opportunity to develop their creativity in writing and develop their expression capabilities.
