Silchar Medical College and Hospital was established in the year 1968. Since its inception, the SMC Hospital is rendering its yeomen’s services to the suffering community of the entire southern part of Assam and its neighbouring states. In the year 1971, the Civil Hospital of Silchar, situated in the heart of the city about 6 kms away from the permanent college building, was taken over as the teaching hospital of the Silchar Medical College. Thereafter, in 1977-78, the main hospital building complex at its permanent site was commissioned.
The State Govt. in 1959 headed by the then Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. B. P. Chaliha, the then Finance Minister, Mr. Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed, and the then Health Minister of Assam Mr. Rupram Brahma decided to have a second medical college in Assam. On 7th Nov., 1959 the State Govt. set up an expert committee to go into the matter and submit their report. The State Govt. decided to have both the Gauhati Medical College and the Silchar Medical College and Hospital simultaneously from August, 1960. The committee recommended Ulubari for Gauhati Medical College and Ghungoor for Silchar Medical College to be the permanent sites. Silchar Medical College and Hospital offers different kind of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Silchar Medical College and Hospital is situated at Ghungoor, Silchar, Assam. Located with its surrounding scenic beauty in the district of Cachar in the southern part of the state of Assam, the Silchar Medical College is a well known medical institution in the country for its academic performances and patients care. Being situated in a very strategic geographic location, it also renders its services to the ailing community of the neighbouring states like Mizoram, North Tripura, West Manipur and South Meghalaya.
The huge three-storied hospital building houses the following departments including their out-patient departments (O.P.D.), wards, operation theatres, X-Rays, Laboratory facilities etc. There is another separate three-storied block for the Dept. of Pathology and Microbiology. The Microbiology dept. will be shifted to its permanent building as soon as it is commissioned. The departments of Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases as well as the isolation wards are situated in separate buildings within the college campus a little away from the main hospital building.
The Central Library of Silchar Medical College and Hospital is presently housed in the ground floor of the main hospital building. It is proposed to be shifted to its permanent site in the first floor of the Administrative Block as soon as the construction is completed. It is a well equipped library, centrally located with easy access to the students, faculty members and other users.
Silchar Medical College and Hospital library is having a number of computers with multimedia facility. Internet Services have been provided. Keeping in view with the latest development of information technology, CDS/ISIS, an integrated software management package have been installed to cover all the functions of library. It has total no. of books available is 26,092 which including 21,952 text and 4,140 reference. It has number of journals with Back Volume: Indian – 20, Foreign – 170.
